The MenoMemo

Before you try another detox...

The Meno Memo

Your dose of clarity, calm, and midlife empowerment

Women telling me:
“I feel bloated all the time.”
“My digestion is off.”
“I can’t eat the way I used to.”
“My body just feels… inflamed.”

Almost every time, they assume it’s just part of getting older.

But more often than not?

👉 It’s not “just aging.”
👉 It’s your gut… trying to keep up with changing hormones.

Your Gut Is One of Your Body’s Detox Powerhouses

When we hear the word detox, most people think juices, cleanses, or cutting everything out.

But your body already has a built-in detox system.

Your liver does the heavy lifting…
And your gut? It’s what helps finish the job.

Here’s how it works (in simple terms):

Your liver processes hormones like estrogen and packages them up for removal. Those hormones are sent to your gut… where they’re supposed to be eliminated.

If your gut isn’t functioning well ~ those hormones don’t leave.

They get reabsorbed, and that’s where things start to feel messy.

What Changes in Your Gut During Perimenopause

This is the part no one really talks about.

As estrogen levels begin to fluctuate (and eventually decline), your gut microbiome changes too.

And not always in your favor.

You may see:

  • Less diversity in gut bacteria
  • An increase in bacteria that promote inflammation
  • Slower digestion and motility
  • Changes in how estrogen is metabolized (hello, estrobolome)

That last one matters more than you might think.

Your estrobolome (a collection of gut bacteria) helps regulate how much estrogen stays in your body.

If it’s out of balance?

You can end up with:

  • Too much circulating estrogen → bloating, breast tenderness, heavy cycles
  • Or poor estrogen support → fatigue, brain fog, low mood

Either way… your gut is involved.

Why You Might Feel More Bloated (Even If Nothing “Changed”)

This is where it clicks for a lot of women.

You’re eating the same foods.
Doing the same things, and suddenly:

  • You’re bloated by the end of the day
  • Certain foods don’t sit well anymore
  • Your jeans feel tighter (even if your weight hasn’t changed)

That’s often a combination of:

  • Slower digestion
  • Changes in gut bacteria
  • Increased sensitivity to stress (which directly impacts your gut)

And let’s not ignore this piece…

Midlife tends to come with more stress, less sleep, and more demands.

All of that directly affects your gut function.

So… What Actually Helps? (Without Overhauling Your Life)

This is where we keep it simple - and doable.

You do not need a restrictive cleanse. You need support.

Start here:

1. Feed your gut what it needs

  • Fiber from vegetables, flax, chia, beans, berries
  • This helps bind and remove excess hormones
  • Bonus: supports cholesterol and blood sugar too

2. Prioritize protein (especially early in the day)

  • Supports blood sugar → which supports gut stability
  • Think eggs, leftovers, smoothies, yogurt (if tolerated)

3. Support regular digestion

  • Don’t ignore the basics: hydration, movement, magnesium if needed
  • Your body can’t detox what it can’t eliminate

4. Calm your nervous system

  • This one gets overlooked… and it matters
  • Chronic stress slows digestion and disrupts gut balance
  • Even 5–10 minutes of walking, breathing, or quiet time helps

5. Add in simple gut-supportive foods

  • Fermented foods (like sauerkraut or yogurt if tolerated)
  • Ground flax (hello fiber + hormone support)
  • Cooked veggies if raw ones feel too harsh right now

A Simple Shift to Try This Week

Before you overhaul everything… Try this:

👉 Add 1–2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed to your breakfast
👉 And take a 10-minute walk after one meal each day

That’s it.

Small shifts like this support your gut, your hormones, and your body’s natural detox pathways - without stress or restriction.

The Bottom Line

If your body feels different in midlife… it’s because it is different.

Different, though, doesn’t mean broken.

Your gut is adapting.
Your hormones are shifting.
And your body is asking for a new kind of support.

Not more restriction.

Not more guessing.

Just smarter, steadier habits that actually work with your body.

That’s the memo.
Short. Doable. Sent with love.

Until next time ~
